Calculation Policy

As Maths is taught very differently compared to when most of us were at school, we use a calculation policy to make sure that there is a consistent approach to the teaching of Maths.  This document should also help you to help your child when they have some arithmetic to practise at home.

How Maths is taught in school

Wherever possible, a new Mathematical idea is taught through using practical apparatus first. Once a child understands a concept, we teach them how to use pictures to represent their thinking, before moving on to the abstract.

Children are given opportunities to use a range of equipment to learn a new skill.

Every class has at least one arithmetic lesson a week, where children are encouraged to develop their speed and recall of number facts.

We use the Mastery approach to Maths - rather than moving on to objectives in a new year group, we encourage children to deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge to real-life problems.

In KS2, we use Target Your Maths and children are trained to access Bronze, Silver and Gold level resources, depending on their confidence and ability.  Every child is given the opporutnity to progress to Gold - we do not set children in ability groups.

Useful websites

We have invested in a number of websites which helps your child to practise key skills. Please send us a message on Seesaw or see your child's teacher if you need a reminder of the log ons.

https://www.sumdog.com is useful to practise all skills and the children particularly enjoy the local and national competitions .

https://www.ttrockstars.com will help your child to prepare for the national times tables test, which will be taken by all children in Year 4.

https://diagnosticquestions.com is suitable for all ages in Years 1-6 and helps children to prepare for tests.

https://www.doodlemaths.com can be played on a computer or hand-held device.  It is recommended that children play for 10 minutes a day to practise key skills.
